Things to do at the Grand Canyon South Rim
The South Rim is the actual Grand Canyon National Park, run by the National Park Service, not the tribal-land Skywalk at Grand Canyon West. 5 hours each way by car, so a same-day round trip means around 9 hours of driving on top of any time at the rim.
Entry is $35 per vehicle, valid for 7 days, and since 2026 foreign visitors aged 16 and over pay an additional $100 surcharge; payment at the gates is now cashless. Once inside, free shuttle buses connect the main viewpoints, including Mather Point and Desert View. Spring and autumn are the best months to visit; summer brings heavy crowds and serious heat down in the canyon itself.
Given the drive, an overnight near the park works far better than trying to do it all in one day.
